Disrupting the status quo with a travel app

Traveling for business is not always easy, especially if you spend a lot of time on the road.

One challenge many business travelers face is the hassle of dragging a suitcase through an airport, to and from a trip, and then having to iron, wash or dry clean your clothes before packing them all up again for the next trip. DUFL was born to fix this.

With the DUFL app, users can select the clothes they want for future travels. DUFL picks them up, cleans, categorizes, and labels them for each customer. Now when traveling, users can simply use the app to select which clothes they want, dates, and destination. Upon arrival, the clothes are waiting at the user’s hotel. When it’s time to leave users can leave items in a box at the front desk, where DUFL will pick them up, clean them, and get them ready for your next trip.

In the span of just a few months, Tallwave designed, developed, and branded the DUFL iOS app.

While DUFL envisioned making business travel easier than ever, they needed help mitigating the risks associated with launching a new startup.

When the team first came to us the DUFL app was just an idea and they were looking for a way to streamline the startup process and build their product.

When you’re disrupting the status quo, there’s going to be risk — around the product, the marketing, and even the user adoption. The founder of DUFL, who had launched three successful companies, knew this well. They were ready to see how their idea could be brought to life as quickly, efficiently, and risk-free as possible.

We were more than up for the challenge.

To ensure our focus was in the right place while we built their app, we aligned with DUFL on the things that would be most impactful for the business.

Since we were helping them build the product from the ground up, we needed to do our fair share of research before we began building. To ensure we would have a handle on everything they wanted, we did a discovery workshop with the DUFL team. Through this endeavor, we were able to identify exactly what they needed for their product to be a success from the start and were able to seamlessly craft their customer journey from beginning to end. We determined DUFL would need prototyping, user testing, brand message crafting and implementation, the full build of the app, and their new marketing site.

Once we started working on the project, we also wanted to ensure the app worked holistically. We built a number of different versions of the DUFL iOS app beyond the primary customer-facing version. Since several different people have to work together to make DUFL’s service work efficiently, we needed the app to be robust enough to meet all of their business needs. In addition to the main interface users would interact with, we also needed to build versions of the app that could support their warehouse operations and customer service teams.

To bring the convenience of DUFL to another source, we also built a web app where users would find the same functionalities as the iOS app via desktop.

In the span of just a few months, we provided a front-end design and code for the DUFL iOS app.

We worked shoulder-to-shoulder, hand-in-hand with DUFL’s product management and backend development teams to handoff the code, on time and on schedule.

Since launch, the DUFL app has continued to experience steady adoption and growth, and has been featured on CNBC, TechCrunch, The Wall Street Journal, Inc., and many others. DUFL has now successfully expanded beyond business travel and into sporting equipment and merchandise as well, and is looking to continue to grow in other markets in the future.
